Below is the schedule for the Medical Merit Badge. Note there is work that needs to be done BEFORE the on line meeting Sat nights.

BEFORE 02/06/2021 6:30 PM-7:30 meeting

  1. Look up and describe the role of a health care professional field that you are interested in, choosing from the options listed in Requirement #4a.
    1. We will cover the remaining professions not chosen during the class time.

During 02/06/2021 6:30 PM-7:30 meeting

  1. Lead the scouts through Requirement #2.
  2. Lead the scouts through Requirement #3.
  3. For next week, each scout will look up one person from Requirement #1.

During 02/13/2021 6:30 PM-7:30 meeting

  1. Each scout will discuss the person he/she selected from Requirement #1.
  2. Lead the scouts through Requirement #5a and #5b.
  3. Lead the scouts through Requirement #4b.
  4. For next week, each scout will look up 3 specialties from Requirement #6a and describe any certifications needed for each specialty chosen to fulfill Requirement #6b.

  7. a. Visit a physician’s office, preferably one who delivers “primary care.” (This may be that of your counselor.) Discuss the components of a medical history and physical examination (an official BSA health form may be used to guide this discussion), and become familiar with the instruments used.
    If this cannot be arranged, demonstrate to your counselor that you understand the components of a medical history and physical, and discuss the instruments involved.
    b. Describe the characteristics of a good diagnostic test to screen for disease (eg, routine blood pressure measurement). Explain briefly why diagnostic tests are not perfect.
    c. Show how to take a blood pressure reading and a pulse reading.
  8. Do the following:
    a. Discuss the roles medical societies, the insurance industry, and the government play in influencing the practice of medicine in the United States.
    b. Briefly tell how your state monitors the quality of health care within its borders, and how it provides care to those who do not have health insurance.
  9. Compare and discuss with your counselor at least two types of health care delivery systems used throughout the world.
  10. Serve as a volunteer at a health-related event or facility in your community (eg, blood drive, “health fair”, blood pressure screening, etc) approved by your counselor.
